    A School for Europe

The Idea

Building tomorrow’s Europe today – This idea lies at the heart of our plans to re-open the Joachimsthalsches Gymnasium in Templin in 2021. Our academic mission: To bring together young people from all over Europe and thereby actively contribute to the strengthening of a future European civil society.

A School for Europe

The new Joachimsthalsches Gymnasium will be a European school – the only one between Frankfurt am Main and Tallinn, the first ever in the new German states, and the very first boarding school of its kind.

At the school, young people from all over Europe will live together and learn together. Not only will they receive an excellent education, but their hands, hearts and minds will be shaped by the European spirit. For Europe is not merely a concept integrated into a curriculum – it’s an idea that students will experience on a daily basis. Instead of foreign languages, they will encounter native languages, and instead of foreign cultures, there will be different cultures.
To make this vision possible, the association for the
Joachimsthalsches Gymnasium – A School for Europe is in need of donors, sponsors and supporters. We have a unique opportunity to build on the eminent academic tradition of the school and imbue it with new ideas and new life.

The Location

The Joachimsthalsches Gymnasium was founded in 1607 – an impressive complex of buildings, idyllically situated among the woods and lakes of the Uckermark region, about one hour away by car from Berlin and Szczecin/Stettin. Until its closure in 1956, it was regarded as one of the foremost schools in the German-speaking countries. The new school will build on the 400-year history of the Joachimsthalsches Gymnasium and its ties to the Reformation and the Enlightenment. Several illustrious figures who are associated with the school include Frederick II, Wilhelm von Humboldt, Carl Friedrich Zelter, Carl Dierke and Erwin Panofsky.

About us

The non-profit school project was founded in 2014. It is supported by an association, the newly established foundation ‘Gebäudeensemble Joachimsthalsches Gymnasium Templin’ and the Art and Cultural Promotion Association in the New German States. The foundation’s offices in Berlin and Templin are responsible for coordinating the activities of the project.

Our consultant for school-pedagogical matters is Prof. Dr. Werner Esser, former member of the management team of Salem, founding director of St. Afra and the managing director of the Louisenlund Foundation. With regard to construction and building matters, we are fortunate to draw on the expertise of the architect Friedrich von Waldthausen (Dienstleistung Denkmal).
